Plays With Color

EOTD: Boyfriend-requested green

February 19th, 2010

I got mail today!  My sample pack from Detrivore arrived today, so I had a rainbow of 50 new samples to play with.  Now, when faced with that many choices I never know what I want to do.  I decided to try an experiment: after I got out of the shower, I asked my boyfriend what color eyeshadow to wear.  After sputtering for a bit about not knowing anything about makeup and what looks good on people, I finally got a color out of him.  Green.  Okay, I don’t wear green often because I have green eyes, but why not?  Here’s what I came up with, 5 hours after putting it on:

Note that it’s a bit creased, and also that my eyeliner didn’t last at all.  I was going to take a picture right after I was done putting on the makeup, as usual, but our friends that we were going out with tonight chose that moment to show up at the door.  The picture is a little washed out too; the shadow may have creased a little, but it hasn’t faded nearly as much as my picture shows.  I’m going to reserve judgment on the Detrivore primer; I really want to like it, because the shadow stuck to it nicely but also blended well, but my skin has been a lot more oily than usual lately, and I think that’s a contributor to the early creasing.  I’ll have to experiment with quantity, since it’s a different texture than I’m used it.  It’s a lot firmer than Paintpot.  (I don’t have a decent open-eyed picture.  The eyeliner had already disappeared from my lower lash line.)

Here’s what I used:

  • Detrivore primer on the lid
  • Detrivore Ectoplasma (bright green) on the inner two-thirds of my lid and slightly into the crease
  • Detrivore Amazon (bright deep emerald green) on the outer half of my lid, blended with the Ectoplasma, and swept into the crease a bit
  • Fyrinnae Nijiro on the brow bone, blended down onto the greens
  • A touch of Urban Decay 24/7 liner in Zero on the outer bit of my upper lash line and smudged onto my lower lashline.  I should have done the waterline, but I was already running a bit late and my waterline can be a pain in the ass to get right.
  • Cover Girl Lash Blast Volume mascara.  I really should have combed my lashes, but whatever.

For lipstick today, I wore NYX Lips in Thalia, and I was right about it.  It’s an excellent my-lips-but-better color.  Oily Mexican food wore it off in the middle, though, and I didn’t really want to put any more on just to hang out on the couch and watch the Olympics in my pajamas.  Trust me, it’s excellent.  I think it may have replaced my Bare MAC Slimshine as my go-to color.

Also, I’m looking for a new black eyeliner pencil that’s waterline-safe.  If anyone has any recommendations (bonus points if they’re drugstore, since I’m probably going to Walmart and/or Target tomorrow), please leave a comment!

Pretty! Love the greens XD I always ask my husband what I should wear and he always says “black”…how boring!

Oh and with Detrivore (since I have oily lids too), this is what I do…first, I really lightly powder my lids with foundation. It sort of sucks up any oil before I put the primer on. Then I rub my ring finger in the primer and rub that finger against the other ring finger (if that makes sense?). Haha you really only need a thin sheen of it and it won’t crease. Plus (beauty school knowledge here!) you should only use ring fingers on the eye. Anyhoo, thats what I do and it lasts and lasts even through my eye waters!

As for a black waterline liner, I normally use the Wet n Wild gel liner…it rocks SO HARD! I’m not sure of a pencil to use, although I hear both Revlon Colorstay and the new Loreal Hip ones work well but I’ve never tried them.

Hope that helps XD I just wrote a freakin letter!

Hee, I don’t mind letters, novels, whatever! I scared my boyfriend the first time I did a really dark eye look, because he’s completely not used to me wearing a lot of makeup. He eventually warmed up to it, but that first glance was amusing to watch.

I’ll try your method with the primer (and I actually did know about the ring finger thing–I’m very careful about that!) and see how it works. I just switched cleansers again (back to what I was using before I decided to try Cetaphil, which turns out to be just too heavy for my skin) and I’m already less oily.

I keep hearing that gel liners work well for the waterline, but I’m (1) a complete klutz and (2) extremely ticklish, so I’m not entirely sure if anything involving a brush will work for me there! I think I have some of the WnW gel liner though, so I’ll give it a try at some point.

    Thanks, Lisa Kate!

  3. I don’t know if it’s specifically “waterline safe” or not, but I’ve been using Sephora’s Flashy Liner Pencils on my waterline for years with no problems. They’re not drugstore, but they’re not $17 a pencil, either :D

Waterproof, nine colors in the line (I have all but Flashy Silver and Deep Black), and they’re only $8 a piece.
